Tips To Keep Your House Safe from Burglary

Staffordshire Police are encouraging householders to take a few simple steps to reduce the likelihood of being targeted by burglars.

Distraction burglaries

Thieves will often make up a story or identity to gain access to your home.
Make sure your front and back doors are locked at all times, even when you’re at home. Burglars often work in teams so lock your back door before answering your front door.
Use a door chain when opening the door and only remove it for family and friends.
Never accept work from passing traders, even if they seem legitimate.
If you ever feel threatened or in danger contact the Police.

Tips to keep your home safe from burglary

Always close and lock your doors and windows when you leave the house – even if it’s only for a short time.
Make sure that any valuables like handbags and keys are kept out of sight of thieves. Open windows, the letterbox or a cat flap can provide access for a thief.
Consider using timer devices to automatically turn on lights or a radio if you are out.
Always store important paperwork or ID documents out of sight – consider purchasing a safe.
Fit a house alarm and remember to set it.
Check your side gate, shed, garage or outbuildings are locked. Make sure items like bicycles are stored in a locked shed or garage.

Keep your car safe and reduce the opportunity for keyless car thefts

It's not just your home, sometimes thieves can target your car too.

Keep your keys in a secure place and use a signal blocking pouch.
Increase security by using steering and pedal locks.
Remove all valuables when you leave your vehicle.
Always lock the doors and close all windows.
